Paul McCartney names John Lennon as his favourite Beatle and 'the leader'

Sir Paul McCartney has revealed that he considered the late John Lennon to be the favourite member and unofficial leader of The Beatles. The 83-year-old musician made the comments during an appearance on the YouTube series Chicken Shop Date, hosted by Amelia Dimoldenberg.

When asked to name his favourite Beatle, Sir Paul replied: 'Well, there’s only one left now. Currently, it’s Ringo. During the Beatles, I think we all used to look up to John, because he was like the leader, even though there wasn’t officially a leader of the group. I think all of us might have said John was our favourite Beatle.'

The Beatles, formed in 1960, consisted of Sir Paul, Lennon, George Harrison and Sir Ringo Starr. After the band's breakup in 1970, Lennon released 11 studio albums before he was shot and killed in December 1980.

The episode coincides with the release of Sir Paul's first album in five years, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane, which recounts memories from his formative years in Liverpool. Sir Ringo features on one track, titled 'Home To Us'.
