X Factor Star Chico Receives Driving Ban After Drink-Driving Conviction
Former X Factor contestant Chico, whose real name is Yousseph Slimani, has been found guilty of drink-driving at Willesden Magistrates' Court. The singer was convicted of driving a Vauxhall Astra with 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on 13 December, which exceeded the legal limit of 35mg.
Emotional Circumstances Led to Offence
During the court proceedings, Slimani explained that he consumed whisky for six hours after learning about the death of a friend from cancer. This tragic event caused him to break his sobriety, as he described himself as typically teetotal. He also mentioned taking Nyquil cold and flu medicine on the same day.
"On that fateful day, I'm teetotal, I don't drink, and it felt like I was going out of my mind, couldn't take it, so I drank," Slimani told the court, expressing his emotional distress at the time of the offence.
Legal Consequences and Penalties
The magistrate handed down significant penalties for the drink-driving conviction:
- Disqualified from driving for 12 months
- Ordered to pay a £600 fine
- Required to pay a £240 victim surcharge
- Must cover £620 in court costs
The total financial penalty amounts to £1,460 in addition to the driving ban, which will significantly impact Slimani's mobility and finances for the coming year.
Background and Public Profile
Chico first gained public attention through his participation in the popular television talent show X Factor, where he became known for his energetic performances and memorable personality. Since his reality television appearance, he has maintained a presence in the entertainment industry, though this conviction represents a serious legal setback.
The case highlights the strict enforcement of drink-driving laws in the UK, where even first-time offenders face substantial penalties including mandatory driving bans and significant financial consequences. The legal system makes no exceptions for celebrity status or personal circumstances when it comes to road safety violations.
