American Tourist Alleges Drugging and Sexual Assault at Indian Homestay

Police in India have arrested two men following serious allegations from an American national who claims she was drugged and sexually assaulted while staying at a homestay in the southern state of Karnataka. The incident reportedly occurred last week in the hilly Kutta village region, located in the southwest part of the state.

Details of the Alleged Assault

The American tourist has formally accused a worker at the homestay property of sexually assaulting her after she was allegedly given a spiked drink by the homestay owner. According to her complaint, she lost consciousness after consuming the drink and was assaulted during that period. She further alleges that the homestay owner attempted to suppress the incident rather than assist her in contacting authorities.

Reports indicate that WiFi services at the property may have been deliberately disabled for several days, severely limiting her ability to communicate with the outside world. The woman reportedly remained at the homestay for nearly three days before managing to leave, after convincing those at the property that she intended to continue her travels elsewhere in Karnataka.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

After leaving the premises, the victim contacted the US embassy in Delhi, which facilitated communication with Indian authorities. Based on this intervention, police registered a formal case under relevant sections of Indian law and initiated a comprehensive investigation. Both the accused worker and the homestay owner have been taken into custody and will remain there until at least 3 May while the investigation continues.

Police officials have confirmed that forensic examinations, medical assessments, and other procedural investigations have been conducted as part of the ongoing probe. The Independent has reached out to the US embassy in Delhi for comment on their involvement in the case.

Broader Context of Sexual Violence in India

This disturbing incident occurs against a backdrop of concerning statistics about sexual violence in India. Official data reveals that police recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022 alone, representing a 20 percent increase from the previous year. This translates to an average of nearly 90 reported rapes daily, or one woman raped every 18 minutes according to official figures.

Experts believe the actual number of sexual assaults is significantly higher due to widespread underreporting caused by social stigma surrounding sexual violence in the country. The case also follows several high-profile assaults against foreign tourists in recent years that have drawn international attention and diplomatic concern.

Recent Cases Involving Foreign Tourists

In March 2025, a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old Indian homestay operator were gang-raped by three men near Hampi in Karnataka. During the same incident, three male tourists were assaulted and pushed into a canal, resulting in one death from Odisha and two survivors including a US national. The three perpetrators were sentenced to death in February 2026 after being convicted of gang rape, murder, and related offenses.

In 2024, a Spanish-Brazilian woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven men during a motorbike tour in Jharkhand's Dumka district. The couple shared a video describing the two-hour attack, during which her male partner was also assaulted. Previous cases include a Swiss tourist gang-raped in Madhya Pradesh in 2013 and an Irish woman assaulted in Goa in 2018, both of which prompted diplomatic engagement and calls for enhanced safety measures for tourists visiting India.
