A major US dog food brand has issued a recall for one of its chicken products due to potential salmonella contamination, prompting pet owners across the country to inspect their freezers. The Indiana-based company, Albright's Raw Pet Food, is recalling its Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced with an expiration date of April 28, 2027. The product may be contaminated with salmonella, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning in both pets and humans.
Recall Details and Distribution
The recalled pouches were distributed to consumers nationwide and to a small number of retailers in Massachusetts, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and New York. The company is urging pet owners to dispose of any affected batches and destroy them in a manner that prevents consumption by children, pets, and wildlife. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, Albright's has assured customers of their commitment to producing safe, high-quality, biologically appropriate pet food.
Product Identification and Handling
Affected items carry the product number 20855404008367 and lot code C001730. The product is sold in 1lb pouches with clear vacuum packaging. The raw product already includes strict handling instructions: packaging warns that the food may carry bacteria if not kept frozen and thawed in a refrigerator. It also advises discarding or refrigerating any uneaten food within 30 minutes, up to 14 hours.
The FDA states that pets infected with salmonella may exhibit lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some infected pets may show no symptoms but can still shed the bacteria in their saliva, potentially spreading it to other animals or humans.
Recent Salmonella-Related Recalls
This recall follows a recent FDA recall of frozen pizzas containing dry milk powder suspected of salmonella contamination. Products sold at Aldi stores nationwide, including Mama Cozzi's Biscuit Crust Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Pizza and Biscuit Crust Cooked Pork Belly Crumbles, Cooked Bacon Topping, Pepper & Onion Breakfast Pizza, were affected. Additionally, three Great Value frozen pizzas sold at Walmart were recalled: Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch, Ultra Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch, and Stuffed Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch.
