The acting US ambassador to Ukraine, Julie Davis, is set to resign and retire amid reported differences with President Donald Trump, as peace talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war remain deadlocked. An American official and the State Department confirmed her departure, which comes during a lull in US-brokered negotiations for a ceasefire.
Davis's Departure and State Department Reaction
The Financial Times first reported that Davis was stepping down due to disagreements with Trump's policies, specifically his declining support for Ukraine. Sources claimed she had grown frustrated with her role. However, the State Department pushed back, calling the characterization 'false.' Spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated, 'Ambassador Davis has been a steadfast proponent of the Trump Administration's efforts to bring about a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine.'
Stalled Negotiations and Global Distractions
Negotiations have stalled since the US launched military action against Iran, causing a global energy shock and diverting Trump's attention from the European conflict. This has hampered progress toward ending Russia's invasion, which began over four years ago.
King Charles's Historic Address to Congress
In a separate development, King Charles III addressed the US Congress, emphasizing that America 'lies at the heart of Nato.' This was seen as a rebuke to Trump's threats to leave the alliance. The King noted Britain's commitment to its largest defence spending increase since the Cold War, countering claims that the US solely supports Europe militarily.
Finland's President: Europe Needs Ukraine
Finnish President Alexander Stubb argued that Europe needs Ukraine more than the other way around, citing Ukraine's battle-hardened military as 'the largest, most efficient, and most modern in Europe.' He and Estonian President Alar Karis supported Ukraine's EU and Nato membership aspirations.
Putin Accuses Ukraine of Escalating Civilian Strikes
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of increasing drone attacks on civilian infrastructure, following a strike on the Tuapse oil refinery. Ukraine confirmed the attack, part of a campaign to disrupt Russia's oil revenue. Putin claimed such strikes could cause severe environmental consequences.
Russia Scales Back Victory Day Parade
Russia announced it will hold its annual 9 May Victory Day parade without military equipment due to the 'current operational situation' in Ukraine. The parade will feature only marching personnel from military educational institutions.
Ukraine Sets Drone Interception Record
Ukraine's Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported that Ukrainian forces shot down over 33,000 Russian drones in March, a monthly record. Ukraine has also doubled the range of its deep-strike capabilities, now hitting targets up to 1,750 km behind enemy lines, targeting Russian oil installations and manufacturing plants.
