UK Small Boat Crossings Hit 200,000 Since 2018

More than 200,000 migrants and refugees have now arrived in the UK via small boats crossing the English Channel since records began in 2018, according to the latest Home Office figures. On Friday, 70 people made the crossing, pushing the total over the 200,000 milestone within nine years.

Government Under Pressure

The figures represent a significant challenge for Sir Keir Starmer's government, which has pledged to take strong action against people-smuggling gangs and reduce the number of dangerous crossings. Despite these commitments, crossings have surged, with 41,472 arrivals in 2025, up from 36,816 in 2024 and 29,437 in 2023. The peak year remains 2022, when approximately 46,000 people made the journey.

Recent Tragedies

Two women died while attempting to cross the Channel last Sunday, following six other fatalities in April. The ongoing loss of life underscores the perilous nature of the route.

Official Response

A Home Office spokesperson stated: "This government is bearing down on small boat crossings. The Home Secretary has signed a landmark new deal with France to boost enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars. This builds on joint work that has stopped over 42,000 illegal migrants attempting to cross the Channel since the election. We have removed or deported almost 60,000 people who were here illegally and are going further to remove the incentives that draw illegal migrants to this country."

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood recently signed a three-year agreement with France worth £662 million to enhance beach patrols and curb crossings. She is also exploring reforms to the asylum system to deter crossings and facilitate deportations.

Political Reaction

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticised the government, saying the immigration system is "totally broken." He added: "Labour are failing to remove illegal immigrants, so it is no wonder they keep flooding in, as they know they will almost certainly get to stay. Among them are many who go on to commit serious crimes, including murder, rape, and the sexual assault of young girls. This situation is a disgrace."
