An Iranian gunboat from the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire on and damaged a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday morning, escalating tensions just hours after former US President Donald Trump offered to extend a fragile ceasefire with Iran.
Second Vessel Targeted
A second vessel was also fired upon later the same day as it exited the Strait, though it sustained no damage and its crew were reported safe. The attacks mark a significant deterioration in the already tense situation in the vital waterway.
Background to the Incidents
The incidents occurred shortly after Trump proposed extending the ceasefire with Iran, which had been due to expire. Iran's state media claimed the first vessel had 'ignored warnings' before being fired upon. However, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the gunboat did not hail the ship before opening fire, contradicting Tehran's account.
These actions follow the US seizure of an Iranian container ship and the boarding of an oil tanker linked to Iran's oil trade over the weekend, further straining relations between the two nations.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been a flashpoint for confrontations between Iran and Western powers. The latest attacks raise fears of a broader conflict and potential disruption to global energy supplies.
