Tragic Loss of Toddler in Suspected Drunk Driving Incident
A devastating incident in Long Beach, California, has claimed the life of a one-year-old girl, Myrah Hunter, after a suspected drunk driver struck her and two family members. The toddler was sitting on the stairs outside an apartment complex with relatives when the driver, identified as 55-year-old Lamont Russell, reversed over the curb at a high speed, hitting them.
Mother's Heartbreaking Account
Myrah's mother, Meicole Johnson, witnessed the crash and described the harrowing moment. 'The driver just came down the street and he was trying to park right there,' she told KTLA. 'He reversed and hit all of them right there that were on the stairs.' Johnson's aunt suffered broken ribs, a split pelvis, and required rods in her back, while her 12-year-old niece sustained a broken femur.
According to a preliminary report from Long Beach Police, a 2013 Chevy Captiva was making a turning movement when it reversed off the roadway onto the sidewalk. Johnson was visibly stricken with grief, crying and yelling as neighbors tried to comfort her. Myrah was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries but was later declared dead.
Family's Anguish and Community Response
Johnson expressed her profound sorrow, stating that her 'whole world has been torn apart.' She added, 'I lost a huge piece of me that I can never get back.' Myrah, described as full of life, enjoyed singing, dancing, and coloring. Instead of planning her second birthday, Johnson now faces arranging memorial services.
The community gathered for a vigil the day after the tragedy, releasing balloons in honor of Myrah. Johnson's cousin, Ali Neal, issued a warning against impaired driving, urging people to make smart decisions like ordering an Uber. 'You took a life, a valuable life,' she said. 'She mattered to everyone.'
Legal Consequences and Investigation
Lamont Russell, who remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, is facing murder charges. He had a previous DUI charge in 2015, and under California law, drivers with prior DUI convictions can be charged with murder if a subsequent offense results in death. Police indicated that speed, distraction, and impaired driving likely contributed to the collision.
Russell is scheduled for arraignment and was placed on a $335,000 bail at the Los Angeles County Jail. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence.
Family's Efforts and Tribute
Johnson has set up a GoFundMe to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and care for her nine-month-old son, Jeremiah. In a tribute, she wrote that Myrah's 'smile lit up every room' and she was 'the most amazing little girl anyone could ever ask for!' The family hopes to pursue the maximum punishment for the driver, emphasizing the unbearable pain caused by this preventable tragedy.
