Teenagers Arrested Over Synagogue Arson Attack in London
Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an arson attack at a synagogue in north-west London over the weekend, according to the Metropolitan Police. The incident has raised serious concerns about a potential pattern of antisemitic violence linked to foreign proxies.

Matt Jukes, the deputy commissioner of the Met, confirmed that a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were detained. He stated that officers are actively investigating claims that a series of antisemitic attacks across the UK may be connected to Iranian-backed groups. Jukes highlighted the severity of this line of inquiry, noting it as a "very serious" matter.
In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Jukes revealed that over the past weeks, police have made 15 arrests related to six incidents. These attacks targeted Jewish premises, a Jewish-led ambulance service, and a Persian media organisation. He described this as part of a "modern hybrid war fought by proxies," where individuals are often recruited for quick cash with little allegiance to the cause.
Background of the Attacks
Vicki Evans, the deputy assistant commissioner, has previously indicated that most of the recent incidents have been claimed online by the group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. This group has reportedly taken responsibility for attacks across Europe, including at Jewish and Israeli locations. Evans emphasised that this represents a disturbing trend of "recruiting violence as a service," exploiting individuals for financial gain.
The latest attack occurred at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow. According to police reports, a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through a window at midnight on Sunday, resulting in smoke being seen inside a room. Fortunately, the Community Security Trust reported only minor smoke damage to an internal room, with no injuries or significant structural harm. The synagogue is situated near a school and children's playground, heightening community concerns.
Scene and Community Response
On Sunday morning, police were observed searching a black SUV in the vicinity of the synagogue. A large cordon was established, with forensic officers, fire investigation dogs, and several plainclothes officers working at the scene. Approximately one marked and five unmarked police cars were stationed outside the building.
Ephraim Mirvis, the chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, has expressed grave concerns, stating that Jews in the UK are facing a "sustained campaign of violence and intimidation" that appears to be "gathering momentum." This sentiment underscores the growing anxiety within the Jewish community amid these targeted attacks.
