A major search and rescue operation is currently in progress at Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire after a teenage boy reportedly entered the water and did not resurface. Emergency services, including South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service, have been deployed to the scene.
Emergency Response
The incident was first reported at approximately 6:50 PM on Monday, May 25, when police received reports that a teenage boy had gone into the water but had not been seen getting out. Multiple emergency vehicles, including around seven fire engines and ten police cars, were dispatched to the park, located near Sheffield.
Residents in the vicinity have reported a police helicopter circling the area as part of the search efforts. The operation continued through the night, with no sign of the missing teenager as of early Tuesday morning.
Police Statement
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson stated: "We were called to Rother Valley Country Park at 6.50pm today (Monday 25 May) following reports that a teenage boy had entered the water but had not been seen getting out. Officers are in attendance alongside emergency crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and efforts are ongoing to try and find him."
The spokesperson added that the search would continue into the night and that updates would be provided as soon as possible.
Background and Warnings
Prior to this incident, South Yorkshire Police had issued warnings ahead of the bank holiday and warm weather regarding the dangers of swimming in open water. The force indicated there would be an increased police presence at Rother Valley Park during this period.
Rother Valley Country Park is a popular destination covering three square kilometres, featuring four lakes. It is situated near the border of Rotherham with Sheffield and Derbyshire.
