The long-serving headteacher of Stretford Grammar School has died following a tragic road collision in Greater Manchester, with four individuals now arrested in connection with the incident.
Tragic Incident on Paddock Lane
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a male cyclist was struck by a car at approximately 6pm on Sunday evening, April 20, 2026, on Paddock Lane in Partington. Emergency services rushed to the scene and the road was closed, but despite their efforts, the cyclist succumbed to his injuries.
The victim has been identified as 56-year-old Michael Mullins, who had served as headteacher of Stretford Grammar School in Trafford for an impressive 17 years. He was believed to be making his way home at the time of the collision.
School Closure and Community Response
Stretford Grammar School closed its doors to pupils on Tuesday, April 21, with deputy headteacher Liz Baxter writing to parents to deliver the devastating news. The school confirmed on its website that it would remain shut due to unforeseen circumstances, promising further details later in the day.
In a heartfelt tribute, Stretford and Urmston MP Andrew Western expressed his shock and sadness, stating: "I am shocked and truly saddened to hear the devastating news of Mr Mullins' tragic death. My thoughts and condolences go out to the staff and students at Stretford Grammar, and above all to Michael's family and friends."
He added: "Michael was a lovely man and in the conversations we had it was clear that the needs of the children in his care were always at the heart of everything he did. His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him, here in the Stretford community and beyond."
Police Investigation and Arrests
Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the inquiry into the fatal incident. Officers were called to Paddock Lane at the junction with Warburton Lane and Dunham Road in Altrincham at around 6.10pm on April 20 following reports of the collision.
The car involved failed to stop at the scene. However, over the course of Sunday and Monday, officers made four arrests in relation to this incident. Three men and one woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and all remain in custody for questioning.
In a statement, GMP said: "The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene however despite best efforts by emergency services, he sadly died. Our thoughts are with his family, who are being supported by specialist officers."
