US Soldier's Newlywed Wife Detained by ICE at Louisiana Base
In a distressing incident that has sparked outrage, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents under the Trump administration have reportedly detained the wife of a US Army staff sergeant at his military base in Louisiana, just days after their marriage. The arrest occurred as the soldier was preparing for deployment, highlighting tensions in ongoing immigration enforcement policies.
Details of the Arrest
Annie Ramos, a 22-year-old biochemistry student with no criminal history, was taken into custody last Thursday at Fort Polk, where her husband, Matthew Blank, is stationed. Blank, 23, has served over five years in the army, including deployments to the Middle East and Europe. The couple had recently married and were in the process of applying for legal permanent residency through marriage, a pathway available for undocumented immigrants.
Ramos had been subject to a deportation order issued in absentia in 2005 when she was an infant, after her family missed an immigration court hearing. Despite this, she had applied for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) in 2020, but her application was never processed due to the Trump administration halting new applicants at the time.
Contradictions in Immigration Policy
This case underscores contradictions in Trump's immigration crackdown, which initially claimed to prioritize deporting dangerous criminals. Instead, it has affected military service members' relatives, including Ramos, who teaches Sunday school and has a clean record. Blank expressed his anguish, stating, "She got ripped away from me," as their plans for her to move in and activate military spouse benefits were abruptly halted.
On April 2, Blank and Ramos visited the Fort Polk visitor center with documents including her birth certificate, Honduran passport, marriage license, and his military ID. When asked about her legal status, they explained she lacked a visa or green card but had a lawyer preparing the paperwork. An attendant made phone calls, leading to the arrival of a supervisor and an officer from the Criminal Investigation Division, who contacted ICE.
Aftermath and Family Response
Ramos was handcuffed and placed in a military police vehicle, then held in an interrogation room. Three ICE agents later arrived, with Blank's parents reporting that the agents seemed apologetic but claimed higher-ups forced the action. Ramos was transferred to a detention facility in Basile, Louisiana, where family visits were restricted, preventing her from signing a completed green card application.
In her statement, Ramos emphasized, "I grew up here like any American. This is all I know. My husband and family are here." ICE has not commented on the incident, leaving questions about the enforcement's impact on military families.
