Annie Ramos, the wife of a US army staff sergeant, has been released from federal custody after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a military base in Louisiana last week.
Ramos, 22, who came to the United States from Honduras as a toddler, was arrested on 2 April at Fort Polk, where her husband Matthew Blank, 23, is stationed. The couple had travelled to the base to enrol Ramos in military spouse benefits.
In a statement following her release, Ramos said: 'All I have ever wanted is to live with dignity in the country I have called home since I was a baby.' She expressed gratitude to her husband and community for their support.
Ramos had a removal order issued against her in 2005 after her family missed an immigration hearing. She applied for protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme in 2020, but her application was not processed. The Department of Homeland Security cited a final order of removal in her case.
Ramos now intends to pursue legal status, complete her degree, and serve her community, echoing her husband's military service.
