A ship anchored off the east coast of the United Arab Emirates has been seized and is now heading toward Iranian territorial waters, the British military confirmed on Thursday.
Incident Details
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center stated that it received reports indicating the vessel was taken by unauthorized personnel while anchored 38 nautical miles (70 kilometers, 44 miles) northeast of the UAE port of Fujairah, which lies near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
UKMTO has not disclosed the name of the ship and said an investigation is underway.
Strategic Importance of Fujairah
Fujairah serves as a crucial oil export terminal and is the UAE's primary port outside the Persian Gulf. The area has been subjected to repeated attacks during the ongoing conflict with Iran, heightening concerns over maritime security in the region.
The incident underscores the volatile nature of the waterway, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supplies transit. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the vessel proceeds toward Iranian waters.
