Royal Mail has issued a new message to all UK homeowners with dogs, urging them to sign up for a free Blue Cross UK webinar. The session aims to help households keep delivery drivers safe while also protecting their pets.
The plea comes after 2,197 dog attacks on postal workers last year. In a Facebook post, Royal Mail said: 'If you have a dog, consider signing up to Blue Cross UK's free webinar for top tips and advice on how to protect yourself, your dog, and our posties.'
The webinar, scheduled for May 12 at 7.30pm, is designed to help owners manage their dogs' reactions to deliveries. Blue Cross UK stated: 'Does your dog find deliveries overwhelming? You aren't alone. Many dogs do. Join us for a free webinar packed full of simple, practical ways to help your dog feel calmer when the doorbell rings.'
Royal Mail also offers dog awareness tips on its website, noting that 'even the most lovable dog can be a danger to postal staff' due to their territorial nature. The service recommends fitting a secure mailbox at the edge of the property if it's not practical to keep the dog away from the postman or postwoman.
Additionally, Royal Mail provides a free poster for homeowners to download and display outside their home, alerting delivery workers that the owner needs time to secure their dog before opening the door.
