Rachel Reeves: Summer Savings Scheme to Help Families Enjoy Treats
Rachel Reeves: Summer Savings Scheme for Families

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has launched the Great British Summer Savings scheme, a package of measures designed to ease the cost of living burden on families across the UK. Writing for The Mirror, Reeves explained that while the war in Iran is not Britain's conflict, it has driven up prices at home, making it harder for families to afford treats like meals out, holidays, or day trips.

What the Great British Summer Savings Scheme Includes

From 25th June until 1st September, VAT will be slashed on children's menu restaurant meals and children's tickets for cinemas, theatres, and concerts across the UK. The scheme also covers amusement parks, wildlife parks, museums, soft play centres, and a wide range of other attractions, ensuring that both adults and children can enjoy summer activities for less.

Additional Support for Families

In England, children under 16 will benefit from free bus travel throughout August, making it more affordable for families to get out and about. The government is also making targeted cuts to tariffs on products including biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit, and nuts, addressing one of the biggest worries for families: the cost of the weekly shop.

These measures build on existing efforts to cut energy bills, protect motorists, and freeze prescription charges and rail fares. Reeves emphasised that in challenging times, the choices governments make matter, and her economic plan focuses on stability, keeping costs down, and investing in resilience.

As the Iran conflict continues to push up prices at home, the Chancellor reiterated her commitment to protecting households and businesses, aiming to build a stronger and more secure Britain.
