Passport Office Issues 'Stressful' Alert to UK Holidaymakers Over Photos
Passport Office Alert: UK Holidaymakers Photo Tips

HM Passport Office has issued a new alert to UK holidaymakers ahead of the summer holidays, advising that taking a passport photo does not need to be a stressful experience.

Summer Travel Alert

As the UK heads towards June and beyond, millions of people are expected to travel abroad over the coming months. A valid passport is essential for overseas trips, and HM Passport Office currently processes applications within approximately three weeks.

The office took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a video with top tips for getting a passport photo right the first time. The message urged travellers: "Taking your passport photo doesn't need to be stressful. Watch this short video of top tips to help you get it right first time and keep your application moving. Click on the link and tick one more thing off your travel checklist."

Photo Tips for Success

The accompanying guidance explains that applicants can now take a passport photo at home, describing the process as "quick and easy, giving you more time to get ready for your travels." Key recommendations include:

  • Use a plain background, ideally light grey or cream, with no objects in the shot.
  • Ensure natural lighting is used and stand away from the background to avoid shadows.
  • Include your entire head, shoulders, and upper body in the photo, keeping your face clear.
  • Keep hair away from the face and brush it down. Headwear worn for religious or medical reasons can remain on.
  • Maintain a neutral expression, as "smiling by accident is a common mistake."

Other common errors to avoid include shadows on the face, glare on glasses, blurry photos, and hair obstructing the face. Once satisfied, applicants can upload the photo online to complete their application.

Passport Eligibility and Revocation

While British nationality is required to apply for or hold a British passport, it does not automatically guarantee issuance. HM Passport Office has identified five situations where passport eligibility may be affected or an existing passport revoked:

  • You are suspected of a serious crime and an arrest warrant has been issued.
  • A court order stops you from having a UK passport or restricts your travel.
  • You are on bail with conditions that prevent you from leaving the UK.
  • You have been brought back to the UK before at the government's expense and have not repaid what you owe.
  • You have received a European Union or United Nations order that restricts your travel.

Holidaymakers are encouraged to check their passport validity well in advance of travel and follow the photo guidance to avoid delays.
