Organised Gangs Exploit Soaring Petrol Prices with Dangerous Fuel Thefts
Organised criminal gangs are increasingly targeting petrol and diesel from forecourts across the country, using large plastic containers concealed within vans to steal fuel for resale on the black market. This alarming trend has emerged as pump prices continue to climb, creating a lucrative opportunity for illicit activities.
Sharp Increase in Fuel Theft Incidents
According to data from Forecourt Eye, a leading industry monitoring group, there has been a significant surge in fuel theft incidents. In the 50 days following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, incidents of fuel theft increased by 13%, while the total volume of fuel stolen rose by 17%. This spike highlights how global events and economic pressures are directly impacting local crime rates.
First-Time Offenders Drive the Rise
The rise in thefts is predominantly driven by first-time offenders, who accounted for a 16% increase in incidents and a staggering 23% rise in the volume of fuel stolen. This suggests that the temptation to engage in fuel theft is attracting new individuals to criminal activity, potentially due to financial strain caused by high living costs.
Extreme Dangers of Improvised Fuel StorageMichelle Henchoz of Forecourt Eye has issued a stark warning about the extreme dangers associated with these thefts. She emphasised that storing fuel in improvised containers within vehicles poses a severe risk, with potentially catastrophic consequences in the event of a collision. The volatile nature of petrol and diesel makes such practices a serious public safety hazard.
Industry Calls for Vigilance
Industry bodies, including Forecourt Eye and the Petrol Retailers Association, are urging heightened vigilance among forecourt operators and the public. They note that rising pump prices are not only leading to more 'drive-offs'—where motorists leave without paying—but are also directly impacting the financial stability of forecourt businesses. The combined effect of organised theft and casual non-payment is creating a challenging environment for retailers.
Impact on Forecourt OperatorsThe financial strain on forecourt operators is mounting, as they face losses from both systematic theft and increased operational costs. This situation underscores the broader economic pressures within the fuel retail sector, which is grappling with fluctuating prices and security concerns.
