The United Kingdom's terror threat level has been escalated from substantial to severe for the first time since 2021, with MI5 issuing a stark warning about an elevated threat to British Jews and Israeli institutions. The decision, taken by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), an arm of MI5, came on Thursday following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, London.
Gradual Increase in Terrorist Threats
In a briefing released on Friday, MI5 stated that the UK has experienced a gradual increase in terrorist threats over recent months, driven by a rise in both Islamist and Extreme Right-Wing terrorism. The current threat environment is notably characterized by an “elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions, in the context of the conflict in the Middle East, evident in recent incidents in the UK and overseas.”
State-Linked Threats
MI5 further warned of “a sustained and significant tempo of State-linked threats, including to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions.” The Golders Green stabbing is the latest in a series of attacks on Jewish sites over recent weeks, prompting accusations that the government has not done enough to tackle antisemitism.
Severe Threat Level
“Severe” is the second-highest threat level, indicating that an attack is highly likely within the next six months. This development marks a significant shift in the UK's security posture and underscores the heightened risks faced by Jewish communities. Authorities urge vigilance and continued cooperation with security services to mitigate potential threats.
