Barcelona Lead Race for Newcastle's Gordon in £80m Deal

Barcelona have entered negotiations with Newcastle United over a potential transfer for England winger Anthony Gordon, overtaking Bayern Munich in the race for his signature, according to Daily Mail Sport.

The Spanish champions and Newcastle officials are currently discussing the structure of a deal, with the total package, including add-ons, approaching £80 million. Bayern Munich's valuation is lower, and while their interest remains strong, it is Barcelona who are pushing to advance talks.

Liverpool are also monitoring the situation, and sources have not ruled out the possibility of them intensifying their interest at a later stage. However, for now, it is believed that Gordon's preference is to move abroad, and his representatives have held discussions with both Barcelona and Bayern. Personal terms with the German club have been in place for several weeks.

Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, was in London for a series of meetings with potential targets in the days leading up to the FA Cup final, where he is understood to have met with Gordon's camp. He also took the opportunity to meet with representatives of Joao Pedro, but Chelsea have no intention of selling the Brazilian.

Gordon scored six Premier League goals this season despite a campaign disrupted by injury. Sources indicate that Barcelona would need to sell players in order to register Gordon, but the financial aspects of the transfer are achievable. Those close to the deal are hopeful of progress before the World Cup.

Liverpool's interest in the 25-year-old is longstanding, but they are currently focusing on RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, who is valued at £85 million, with Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola as another option.

Gordon came close to joining Liverpool two years ago, with a medical arranged in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024, only for Newcastle to pull out of the deal as they sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest instead. Anderson is now the subject of conversations between Manchester City and Forest as they look to agree a deal worth over £100 million.

Everton, who sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45 million in 2023, have a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15 per cent of the profit from any future transfer.
