Robert Morris, the prominent founder and former senior pastor of Texas's massive Gateway Church, has been released from an Oklahoma jail after completing a six-month sentence for sexually abusing a child in the 1980s. The 64-year-old evangelical leader, who once served on a spiritual advisory board during Donald Trump's first presidency, pleaded guilty in early October to five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child.
Details of the Case and Sentencing
Under a carefully negotiated plea agreement, Morris was required to serve only six months in the Osage County jail, with the remaining nine and a half years of his ten-year sentence suspended. Official jail records and multiple local reports confirm his early Tuesday release from custody. In addition to the jail time, the court mandated that Morris register as a sex offender and pay $270,000 in restitution to his victim.
Victim's Account and Courtroom Statement
Cindy Clemishire, the woman who publicly identified herself as Morris's victim, provided harrowing details to the Dallas Morning News in 2024. She revealed that the sexual abuse began in 1982 when she was just twelve years old and Morris was twenty-one. At that time, Morris was working as a traveling preacher, and Clemishire's family had allowed him to stay in their Oklahoma home.
Clemishire was present in the courtroom when Morris entered his guilty plea last fall. In a powerful prepared statement, she directly addressed Morris, stating emphatically, "There is no such thing as consent from a 12-year-old child. We were never in an 'inappropriate relationship.' I was not a 'young lady' but a child. You committed a crime against me." Her words underscored the profound violation and lasting trauma inflicted upon her.
Fall from Grace and Church Resignation
Morris's resignation as senior pastor of Gateway Church came swiftly in 2024, immediately after Clemishire went public with her allegations. The church, located in Southlake, Texas, had grown under his leadership into one of the largest and most influential megachurches in the entire United States. His indictment followed in March 2025 on the specific counts to which he later pleaded guilty.
Political Connections and Aftermath
Beyond his religious influence, Morris maintained significant political ties. He served on an evangelical advisory board during Donald Trump's first term in the Oval Office. Trump himself attended a high-profile roundtable event at Gateway Church in June 2020, highlighting Morris's reach into political circles.
Following his release, Morris will remain under strict supervision, serving nine and a half years of probation as part of his suspended sentence. This case has sent shockwaves through evangelical communities and raised serious questions about accountability, power, and the protection of vulnerable individuals within religious institutions.
