Malaysian police have arrested 51 men in a series of raids on a Kuala Lumpur hotel in connection with what authorities described as a drug-fuelled 'gay party'. The individuals, aged between 21 and 52, included 28 foreign nationals. During the operation, officers seized illicit substances such as MDMA, ecstasy, and ketamine.
Incident Details
According to narcotics department director Hussein Omar Khan, one man suspected of attending the gathering was discovered unconscious in the hotel lobby. He was rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital but later pronounced dead. Of those detained, 36 tested positive for drug use.
Legal Context
Homosexuality remains criminalised in Muslim-majority Malaysia. Under sharia law, same-sex acts are banned, and sodomy is considered a crime. The arrests have reignited discussions about the country's strict laws regarding sexual orientation and drug offences.
The police operation underscores ongoing enforcement of Malaysia's conservative legal framework, which imposes severe penalties for both drug-related activities and same-sex conduct. Authorities have not disclosed whether charges will be filed under sharia or civil law.
