A devastating volcanic eruption on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has claimed the lives of at least 14 people, with dozens more injured and several still missing. Mount Marapi, one of the country's most active volcanoes, erupted without warning on Sunday, spewing ash and hot gas clouds that caught hikers by surprise.
Rescue Operations Underway
Emergency services have been working tirelessly to rescue stranded hikers, with 49 people successfully evacuated from the mountain as of Monday. However, the search for the missing continues, hampered by dangerous conditions including ongoing eruptions, thick ash, and rugged terrain. The eruption sent a column of ash 3,000 metres into the sky, blanketing nearby villages and forcing residents to flee.
Victims and Injuries
Among the dead are university students who were on a hiking trip. Many of the injured suffered burns from hot ash and gas, with some in critical condition. Local hospitals are overwhelmed, treating dozens of patients with respiratory issues and burns.
Mount Marapi's eruption was sudden, catching authorities and locals off guard. The volcano had been at a lower alert level, but no significant activity was recorded prior to the blast. Experts warn that further eruptions may occur, urging caution for those near the volcano.
