Former National Guardsman's 'Dark Thoughts' Preceded Deadly Family Massacre
The former Army National Guardsman who executed eight young children in a horrific domestic shooting had been battling profound "dark thoughts" and suicidal ideation in the weeks leading up to the tragedy, according to his parents. Shamar Elkins, aged 31, opened fire during a domestic disturbance at a residence in Shreveport, Louisiana, targeting his family in what has become one of the deadliest family massacres in American history.
Marital Breakdown and Mental Anguish
Elkins had been experiencing significant stress regarding his relationship with his 34-year-old wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, who had initiated divorce proceedings. His parents revealed to The New York Times that their son was struggling with intense suicidal thoughts, reaching a crisis point over the Easter holiday. During an emotional telephone call, Elkins reportedly told his mother, Mahelia Elkins, and stepfather, Marcus Jackson, that he wanted to end his own life.
"I told him, 'You can beat stuff, man. I don't care what you're going through, you can beat it,'" Jackson recounted to the newspaper. "Then I remember him telling me: 'Some people don't come back from their demons.'" The couple had been together for a decade and had solemnized their marriage on April 9, 2024, according to a poignant Facebook post commemorating their first anniversary.
The Easter Gathering and Warning Signs
Just two weeks before the massacre, Elkins posted a cheerful Easter photograph featuring himself smiling alongside his children, accompanied by a caption expressing gratitude for a blessed day at church. Mahelia Elkins last saw her son during a family dinner the weekend preceding the shooting, noting that "nothing appeared off with him at the time." However, she and Jackson had grown increasingly uneasy about their son's wellbeing in recent weeks, prompting them to send a text message checking on him the Tuesday before the tragedy.
Elkins responded that the family was "ok," but never replied to subsequent messages expressing love and concern. One month earlier, he had responded to a viral social media post questioning whether fathers would choose to have children with a different woman while retaining the same offspring, replying bluntly: "Hell yehhhhhhhh I would." This comment has since been viewed as a potential warning sign in retrospect.
The Horrific Shooting Spree
The domestic violence incident unfolded across three separate locations in Shreveport. Elkins first massacred eight children execution-style at a home near a Baptist church. The victims included his seven biological children and one nephew, ranging in age from three to eleven years old. The children were identified as:
- Jayla Elkins, 3
- Shayla Elkins, 5
- Kayla Pugh, 6
- Layla Pugh, 7
- Markaydon Pugh, 10
- Sariahh Snow, 11
- Khedarrion Snow, 6
- Braylon Snow, 5
Elkins then shot both his wife and another woman who was the mother of three of his children, with one victim sustaining life-threatening injuries. During the chaos, a young boy leapt from the roof of the home in a desperate escape attempt. The perpetrator subsequently carjacked a vehicle and led police on a high-speed chase before being fatally shot by officers at a third location.
Background and Criminal History
Shamar Elkins previously served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020, working as both a Signal Support System Specialist and a Fire Support Specialist. He left military service as a private with no deployment history. Elkins also had a criminal record, having been arrested in 2019 for firing shots near a high school in Shreveport. He served thirty days in parish jail and received eighteen months of supervised release for weapons charges.
Mahelia Elkins disclosed that she had been a teenager struggling with crack cocaine addiction when she became pregnant with Shamar, leaving him to be raised by a family friend. Although they reconnected approximately ten years ago, she described their relationship as not extremely close. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as authorities piece together the events leading to this devastating family tragedy.
