Eight Children Killed in Louisiana Mass Shooting by Gunman Shamar Elkins
A devastating mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday resulted in the deaths of eight children, marking the deadliest such incident in the United States in over two years. Authorities have identified the victims, aged three to 11, and described the event as a "violent domestic incident."
Victims and Incident Details
The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office released the names of the children: Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 6; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. The gunman, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, fatally shot these children, including seven of his own, at two separate addresses in Shreveport.
According to police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon, a total of 11 people were shot during the violence. The injured included two women: Shaneiqua Pugh, the gunman's wife and mother of four of his children, and the mother of his three other children. Both women were listed in critical condition.
Police Response and Investigation
Police chased Elkins after he stole a car and shot him to death. The Louisiana State Police took over the investigation into the officers' killing of Elkins, confirming no officers were harmed. Bordelon stated that Elkins shot the mother first before killing the children, with detectives confident the shooting was "entirely a domestic" case.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed shock, saying, "My heart is just taken aback. I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur." Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the killings as "maybe the worst tragic situation" in recent memory.
Background of the Gunman
Elkins had prior legal issues, including a 2019 arrest for illegal use of weapons. Police were unaware of any domestic violence history. He served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020 and later worked for UPS. Relatives reported he was stressed about his relationship with his wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, who sought a divorce, with a court date set for Monday.
On Easter Sunday, Elkins called his mother and stepfather, Marcus Jackson, in tears, expressing suicidal thoughts. Jackson recalled Elkins saying, "Some people don't come back from their demons." His mother, Mahelia Elkins, noted he had been raised by a family friend due to her past addiction issues.
Broader Context and Reactions
This incident fits the definition of a family annihilation, a crime type identified since the 1980s. According to the Gun Violence Archive, it is the seventh mass killing in the US in 2026 and part of at least 114 mass shootings reported this year. The archive defines mass killings as cases with four or more victims killed.
Louisiana ranks low in mental health care access, with a 2024 state report highlighting intimate partner violence as a significant public health concern. The National Domestic Violence Hotline warns that leaving a relationship is often the most dangerous time.
In response, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a gun violence prevention advocate, urged action, stating, "Our leaders must act – now." The non-profit Sandy Hook Promise referenced research showing gun violence as the leading cause of death for US children and that most child victims in mass shootings are killed by family members.
This tragedy underscores ongoing debates about gun control in the US, where Congress has often responded to such events with prayers rather than legislative changes.
