Drunk Driver Sentenced to Over 11 Years After Fatal Cyclist Collision
James O'Donnell, a 35-year-old man, has been handed a prison sentence of 11 years and eight months after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The incident occurred on March 5 last year in Huyton, Merseyside, where O'Donnell was driving at a speed 33mph over the limit when he struck and killed 63-year-old cyclist Keith Hornby.
Shocking Actions Following the Fatal Crash
In a display of apparent indifference, O'Donnell did not stop to assist his victim. Instead, he turned his black Volkswagen ID5 around, briefly paused to look at Mr. Hornby lying injured in the street, and then sped away. He abandoned his vehicle at a nearby housing estate and proceeded to walk to a shop to purchase more alcohol.
Merseyside Police apprehended O'Donnell as he was returning to his home. Bodycam footage from the arrest, released by the force, shows a visibly intoxicated O'Donnell grinning and stumbling in the street. In the video, he slurs his words, asks for his car keys and if he can smoke a cigarette, and threatens to 'kick off' when denied.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
O'Donnell appeared at Merseyside Crown Court, where he admitted to causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene, and driving with an alcohol level above the legal limit. A breath test sample provided after his arrest revealed he was nearly three times over the legal limit. Initially, he denied the offences but changed his plea prior to trial.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, the Lead Investigating Officer from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, condemned O'Donnell's actions. He stated, 'The decision by James O'Donnell to drive at grossly excessive speeds whilst under the influence of alcohol showed a complete disregard for anyone else on the road that day.'
DS Roper added that O'Donnell showed 'absolutely no remorse or concern for what he had done'. He described Mr. Hornby as a primary carer for his elderly mother, who was simply taking an hour out of his demanding day to enjoy a bike ride on a familiar route.
Family Tribute and Community Response
Mr. Hornby sadly died at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision. In a statement, his family expressed gratitude for the efforts of Merseyside Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the Crown Court. They said, 'We can finally put this behind us and move on with our lives. A significant weight has been lifted off our shoulders and we can think of all the great memories Keith has given us all.'
The family also extended a special thank you to the community members who immediately attended to Keith and assisted the police in apprehending the offender. DS Roper echoed these sentiments, thanking those who helped at the scene and supported the investigation throughout.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of drunk and dangerous driving, with O'Donnell's actions leading to a tragic loss of life and a substantial prison sentence.
