Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region early Sunday, using drones and a hypersonic ballistic missile, killing at least four people and injuring about 100. The assault targeted a water supply facility, a market, residential buildings, and schools, according to Ukrainian officials.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used the Oreshnik hypersonic missile for the third time in the conflict, hitting the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region. He described the attack as 'heavy,' involving 600 drones and 90 missiles, including 36 ballistic missiles, with Kyiv as the primary target.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported two deaths and 56 injuries in the capital, with damage recorded in every district. A school was set on fire, and a business centre attack trapped people in a shelter. The surrounding Kyiv region also reported two deaths and nine injuries.
The National Art Museum of Ukraine was damaged, though its collection remained intact. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry building was hit for the first time since World War II, with minor damage. Government headquarters also suffered broken windows but no casualties.
Russia's defence ministry confirmed the strikes, calling them retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on civilian facilities on Russian territory. Zelenskyy vowed that the attack would not go unpunished, while residents described the night as terrifying and unprecedented.
