Counterprotester Throws Improvised Explosive at NYC Anti-Islam Rally
Counterprotester Throws Explosive at NYC Anti-Islam Rally

Police in New York City have confirmed that a device thrown by a counterprotester during an anti-Islam demonstration on Saturday was an improvised explosive, according to a preliminary analysis. The incident occurred outside the Manhattan residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, where a "Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City" event was being led by far-right activist Jake Lang.

Violent Confrontation at Gracie Mansion

The sparsely attended protest drew a much larger group of counterdemonstrators, leading to a confrontation that resulted in two people being taken into custody. Police reported that one counterprotester tossed a smoking object containing nuts, bolts, screws, and a "hobby fuse" into the crowd.

Bomb Squad Analysis Reveals Serious Threat

In a social media post on Sunday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the department's bomb squad determined the object was not a hoax device or smoke bomb. Instead, it was classified as an "improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death." The device extinguished itself just steps away from police officers at the scene.

Tisch further noted that the same individual who threw the first device then received a second one from another counterprotester. This second device was dropped and did not appear to ignite. Charges against both counterprotesters are still pending as authorities continue their investigation.

Mayor Condemns Violence and Explosive Use

Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a statement on Sunday condemning the violence. "Violence at a protest is never acceptable," Mamdani said. "The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are."

Additional Arrests and Background on Organizer

In addition to the counterprotesters, a person associated with Lang's protest was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, assault, and unlawful possession of a noxious matter. This individual allegedly used mace against counterprotesters during the event.

Jake Lang, the organizer of the anti-Islam demonstration, has a controversial history. He was previously charged with assaulting an officer with a baseball bat, civil disorder, and other crimes related to the January 6th Capitol riot. Lang received clemency last year as part of former President Donald Trump's sweeping act of clemency for January 6 defendants.

Lang's Political Ambitions and Past Events

Lang recently announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Florida. Earlier this year, he organized a rally in Minneapolis in support of Trump's immigration crackdown. That event also drew an angry crowd of counterprotesters, who quickly chased him away from the scene.

Ongoing Investigation and Federal Involvement

Police Commissioner Tisch confirmed that the New York Police Department is working with federal prosecutors and the FBI on the case. The collaboration underscores the seriousness of the incident and the potential federal implications of using an improvised explosive device at a public demonstration.

The investigation remains active as authorities piece together the events of Saturday's protest. The confirmation of an actual explosive device being used marks a significant escalation in protest-related violence in New York City, raising concerns about public safety at future demonstrations.
