A school bus aide in New York has been arrested and charged with multiple offences following allegations of physically abusing special needs elementary school students. Devone Medlock, 37, is accused of engaging in violent behaviour, including pushing, slamming, restraining, and sitting on the children while working on a bus route for Grand Avenue School in Baldwin, Long Island.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, the incident occurred on January 13, 2026. Medlock, employed by the First Student bus company at the time, allegedly became physically and verbally abusive towards multiple special needs students. Police described his actions as violent, involving direct physical harm to the vulnerable children. It remains unclear whether any of the students required medical treatment for injuries sustained during the alleged abuse.
Medlock was taken into custody at his residence in Amityville on Tuesday following an investigation. He now faces a total of eighteen criminal charges, comprising six counts of third-degree assault, six counts of third-degree menacing, and six counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Superintendent Monique Darrisaw-Akil stated that the district immediately notified local law enforcement in January. She reiterated that the safety and well-being of students is the district's highest priority, with a firm commitment to holding accountable anyone responsible for abusive behaviour towards pupils.
