Nine people have died after a shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history. Police said six were found dead inside the school, two at a nearby residence, and the suspected shooter was discovered dead from an apparent self-inflicted injury. More than 25 people were injured, including two with life-threatening conditions.
The suspect was described in a police alert as a female in a dress with brown hair, later confirmed to be the same person found dead at the school. Police Superintendent Ken Floyd said the scene was 'very dramatic' and that investigators were working to determine a motive. He added that no other suspects were believed to be involved.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was 'devastated' by the shootings and suspended plans to travel to Germany for the Munich security conference. 'Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country,' he said. British Columbia Premier David Eby called it an 'unimaginable tragedy' and thanked first responders who arrived within two minutes of the emergency call.
The town of Tumbler Ridge, with fewer than 2,500 residents, said the incident was 'deeply distressing'. The secondary school, serving approximately 160 pupils from ages 12 to 18, will remain closed for the rest of the week, with counselling offered to those in need. The Parent Advisory Council expressed gratitude for the quick response of emergency services.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, which occurred just after 1.20pm local time. The RCMP active-shooter alert was lifted at 5.45pm after all remaining students and staff had been evacuated safely. Officials said they may struggle to determine why the attack happened but would follow all leads.
