Italy's foreign minister has confirmed that rescuers have discovered the bodies of four Italian divers deep inside an underwater cave in a Maldives atoll. The announcement came on Monday after a renewed search operation, which had been temporarily halted following the death of a local military diver during a perilous mission to reach the trapped individuals.
Details of the Incident
According to Italy's Foreign Ministry, five Italian divers are believed to have lost their lives while exploring a cave at a depth of approximately 50 meters (160 feet) in the Vaavu Atoll on Thursday. This depth significantly exceeds the recreational diving limit in the Maldives, which is set at 30 meters (98 feet). The body of one Italian, identified as a diving instructor, was recovered earlier outside the cave.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The search operations resumed on Monday after being suspended due to the tragic death of a Maldivian military diver who was part of the rescue team. The mission was described as highly dangerous, with the cave's complex structure and depth posing significant challenges. The Italian Foreign Ministry expressed deep gratitude to the Maldivian authorities for their tireless efforts in the search and recovery operations.
The incident has raised questions about safety regulations for deep diving in the Maldives, a popular destination for tourists and divers. Authorities are expected to review protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
