Barnaby Joyce, now a One Nation member, has said the party would welcome some refugees while restricting other migrants. Speaking to Guardian Australia's Adeshola Ore, Joyce argued there 'has to be a form of temperance with people who are in imminent threat of their lives'.
Shift from previous stance
As deputy prime minister and Nationals MP for New England, Joyce previously supported a campaign to make Armidale a site for refugee resettlement. Now, One Nation advocates for limiting migration to Australia to those who can speak English.
Exception for those in danger
Joyce clarified that the party's position does not mean abandoning people in life-threatening situations. 'I don’t think anyone is suggesting that if your house is completely burning down we’re going to lock the doors and keep you in there,' he said.
