A man has been arrested on Westminster Bridge during the Unite the Kingdom far-right protest in London, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. The arrest is one of 31 made across the Unite the Kingdom and pro-Palestine Nakba Day demonstrations on Saturday.
The suspect was detained after an incident in Birmingham where a man was run over by a van following the removal of flags from lamp-posts. He was arrested at Euston station near the rally's meeting point. Another man was arrested on suspicion of encouraging an attack on a police officer.
West Midlands Police said a man in his 30s suffered a broken leg requiring surgery after the Thursday evening incident in Stirchley, Birmingham. He remains in hospital.
The Met estimated 60,000 attended the Unite the Kingdom march, down from 150,000 at a similar event in September. In contrast, organisers of the pro-Palestine Nakba Day rally claimed at least 250,000 attendees, making it ten times larger than the far-right demonstration.
Police said the Nakba protest concluded and participants left the area. Parliament Square and Whitehall are largely clear, though roads remain partially closed for infrastructure removal.
