Travel experts have issued a warning after data revealed that thousands of UK holidaymakers were arrested abroad in 2024, including 917 in Spain and 150 in Greece. The figures, based on Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) data analysed by MoneySuperMarket, show a 10% increase in arrests compared to 2023, with 4,643 Brits detained overseas last year.
Spain and Greece top the list
Spain saw the highest number of UK tourist arrests in 2024, with 917 individuals detained. Over the eight-year period from 2016 to 2024, a total of 8,998 British nationals were arrested in Spain. Greece recorded 150 arrests in 2024, ranking sixth globally, with 886 arrests over the same eight-year span.
Other countries with significant numbers of UK tourist arrests in 2024 include the USA (704), the UAE (262), Thailand (245), France (141), and Australia (95). Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Japan, China, and Poland also featured prominently.
New Greek beach restrictions
Greece has recently introduced a ban on sunbeds, umbrellas, and speakers across 251 beaches, along with event-related restrictions. The ban, first implemented in 2024, has been expanded ahead of the summer season. Travel experts urge tourists to familiarise themselves with these local regulations to avoid legal issues.
Understanding the risks
The analysis found that just over 5% of arrests involved drug-related offences, and 3% were for sexual offences. The remaining 92% were classified as general or unknown, highlighting the importance of understanding local laws.
Kara Gammell, Travel Insurance Expert at MoneySuperMarket, commented: "While most travellers understand the basics of staying safe abroad, local laws and customs can differ significantly from the UK. Travel insurance is vital for protecting you if things go wrong on holiday, whether it's covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage or flight disruptions. What it won't cover, however, is arrests or legal trouble abroad. That's why it's so important to research local laws and customs before you travel. Being prepared is the best way to stay safe."
The total number of British nationals arrested overseas between 2016 and 2024 stands at 37,680, according to FCDO data. With summer approaching, holidaymakers are advised to check official travel advice and local regulations to avoid becoming part of these statistics.
