Violence flared on the streets of central London this weekend as far-right protesters descended upon a hotel housing asylum seekers, resulting in what the Metropolitan Police have labelled an 'utterly shocking' level of aggression towards officers.
The demonstration, which began outside the Smart Stay Hotel on Suites Road in Kensington, quickly escalated into a major public order incident. Protesters, many draped in St George's flags, were seen launching fireworks and other missiles at a significant police cordon established to protect the building and its occupants.
Scale of the Violence and Police Response
The Metropolitan Police confirmed a total of 26 officers sustained injuries during the confrontations. The injuries ranged from minor to more serious, including a suspected dislocated elbow and a broken hand. One officer was struck in the face by a firework.
In a statement, Chief Superintendent Louise Puddefoot condemned the 'appalling level of violence' directed at her team. 'The level of violence towards officers was utterly shocking. It is never acceptable and we will not tolerate it,' she said.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Police made several arrests at the scene for a variety of offences, including assault on an emergency worker, possession of an offensive weapon, and a public order offence. The force has also launched a thorough investigation, including a full review of body-worn video footage and other evidence, to identify further suspects.
'This behaviour will not be tolerated and those responsible will be brought to justice,' a Met spokesperson added, signalling that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
Political and Community Reaction
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from local officials and community leaders. The confrontation highlights the ongoing tension and divisive nature of the national debate surrounding immigration and the housing of asylum seekers in the UK.
This violent protest underscores the immense pressure and dangers police officers face while maintaining public order and protecting communities.
