Trump posts VETO hat after midterm losses

Donald Trump has issued a bizarre response to the Republicans’ disastrous midterm election results — posting an image of a hat embroidered with ‘VETO’ in the same style as his MAGA baseball caps. The President admitted defeat to the Democrats as results came in on Wednesday, November 4, confirming the Republicans had lost control of both the House and Senate.

Democrats regain Congress

The Democrats regained control of Congress by claiming stunning victories in some of America’s most conservative areas, like Texas and South Carolina.

Unlike the 2020 election, when Trump claimed the result was ‘stolen’, the President accepted the result and said he would work with Democrats. However, he then took to social media to post the hat image, suggesting he will block any laws the Democrats try to pass in Congress, as the US constitution allows the President to do.

Truth Social tirade

The hat post was one of a series of posts on Truth Social, which included attacks on Fox News and losing candidates.

“I wasn’t on the ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!,” he ranted in one post. Another said: “If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO [Republican In Name Only] in the last six months of his political life, he wouldn’t have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty!”

Historic state flips

Abbott’s loss to Gina Hinojosa meant the Democrats now run the Lone Star state for the first time since 1995. On the same night, James Talarico won the Democrats’ first Senate seat in Texas since 1988.

Elsewhere, South Carolina — typically described as ‘ruby red’ such is the support for the Grand Old Party — flipped blue as Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham in the Senate race. Ms Graham was the sister of long-term Senator Lindsey Graham, who died unexpectedly in July.

Other major Democrat wins came in Iowa, Kansas, Georgia, and Ohio.
