Wes Streeting has revealed that he informed Sir Keir Starmer of his intention to challenge him for the Labour Party leadership during a 16-minute meeting at Downing Street last week. The former health secretary made the disclosure in his first broadcast interview since resigning from the cabinet.
Leadership Ambitions Confirmed
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Thursday, 21 May, Streeting confirmed his leadership ambitions and stated that he was “very honest with the prime minister privately about where I thought the Government was going wrong.” The meeting, which lasted just 16 minutes, was described by Streeting as a frank exchange of views.
Resignation and Aftermath
Streeting stepped down as health secretary earlier this month, citing policy disagreements with the prime minister. In the interview, he elaborated on his decision to challenge Starmer, saying that the party needed a new direction to reconnect with voters. He also praised Starmer’s leadership but insisted that change was necessary.
The announcement has sent shockwaves through the Labour Party, with several other potential candidates reportedly considering their own bids. The leadership contest is expected to be formally announced in the coming weeks, with a ballot of party members likely to take place over the summer.
