Seven Candidates Confirmed for Greater Manchester Mayoral By-Election
Seven Candidates in Greater Manchester Mayoral By-Election

The list of all seven candidates standing in this year's Greater Manchester mayoral by-election has officially been confirmed. The by-election was triggered when Andy Burnham resigned as mayor of Greater Manchester, following his victory in the Makerfield by-election on June 18. Burnham won the first mayoral election in 2017 and secured two further terms in office after elections in 2021 and 2024.

Election Details and Voting System

People living in all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester will elect Burnham's successor on July 30. This year, the first-past-the-post system has been swapped for the supplementary vote, where voters will cast a first and second choice. If a candidate is the first choice for more than 50 percent of voters, they win immediately. If no candidate wins more than half of the votes, the top two candidates remain in the running, and second preference votes for the eliminated candidates are counted.

Voter Registration and Polling Information

Anyone not registered to vote has until midnight on Tuesday July 14 to do so. Polling stations across Greater Manchester will be open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday July 30. The results will be declared on Friday.
