RCT by-election after Pentre Labour councillor steps down

A by-election will be held for the Pentre ward on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council after Labour councillor Georgina Williams stood down for personal reasons.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has confirmed there is now a vacancy for a seat in the Pentre ward on the authority. Williams was elected to the Pentre seat for Labour alongside Councillor Norman Morgan at the 2022 council elections.

Williams is the daughter of former Labour Senedd Member for Rhondda, Buffy Williams, who served as an MS between 2021 and 2026.

Vacancy to be filled by election

A notice from the council says the vacancy will be filled by election within 35 days from the date of the notice on November 3.

This means Labour has 55 of the 75 council seats in Rhondda Cynon Taf ahead of the by-election.

Current council composition

Plaid Cymru has eight seats, the Independent group has three, the RCT Independent Group has three, the Conservatives have two councillors, and there are three non-specified councillors.
