By-Elections Held Across Three London Boroughs

By-elections took place in five London council wards on Thursday, June 25, after successful candidates from the May local elections resigned shortly after being elected. The votes occurred in Haringey, Hackney, and Ealing, with results that shifted the political makeup of some councils.

Northumberland Park (Haringey)

Green Party candidate Jayon Henriques was elected in Northumberland Park on May 7 but was later found ineligible to serve as a councillor. The party did not disclose the reason. In the by-election, Labour's Ajda Ovat was elected with 877 votes, defeating Rose Dakuo (Green, 839), Ian David Sinclair (Reform, 106), Kenny Ajao (Conservative, 98), and David Schmitz (Lib Dem, 60). Turnout was 1,989 (22.35%).

Woodside (Haringey)

Labour's Hasret Bozdogan won the Woodside ward in May but stepped down for personal reasons that emerged after May 7. The by-election saw Elara Shurety (Green) elected with 1,033 votes, ahead of Thayahlan Iyngkaran (Labour, 978), Ruth Price (Reform, 171), Mikeleno Fureraj (Conservative, 0 votes recorded), and Rakeebah Rahim (Lib Dem, 93). Turnout was 2,400 (24.35%). Following these results, the council composition is Green 28, Labour 21, Liberal Democrat 8, meaning no overall control and the Greens continue as a minority administration.

North Acton (Ealing)

Simon Anthony (Green Party) was elected on May 7 but is believed to have resigned due to ill health. In the by-election, Marijn van de Geer (Green) was elected with 804 votes. Other candidates: Gareth James Shaw (Labour, 642), Abdi Ahmed (Lib Dem, 523), Jonathan Notley (Reform, 309), Sally Gorman (Conservative, 257), and Craig Smith (Ealing Community Independents - Putting Acton First, 129). Turnout was 24.21%. The council remains under Labour control with 46 Labour, 13 Liberal Democrats, 5 Green, and 1 Independent.

Dalston (Hackney)

Zoë Garbett (Green Party) was elected mayor of Hackney and also retained her Dalston seat, but had to vacate it as she cannot hold both roles. Manal Massalha (Green) won the by-election with 549 votes, followed by Grace Adebayo (Labour, 342), Ivon Fleming (Reform, 26), Peter Munrow (Lib Dem, 24), and Jerry Sulaiman (Conservative, 10). Turnout was 13.81%.

Hackney Central (Hackney)

James Tilden (Green Party) was elected in Hackney Central but was ineligible because he is a teacher. Noah Kirksted-Breen (Green) won with 676 votes, defeating Sheila Suso-Runge (Labour, 624), Ken Gabbott-Rolph (Lib Dem, 83), Vahid Almasi (Reform, 59), and Serhan Bay (Conservative, 49). Turnout was 15.16%. The council remains under Green control with 42 Greens, 9 Labour, and 6 Conservatives.
