This week in history, from 4 to 10 May, features a series of transformative events captured on The Independent's front pages, spanning elections, conflicts, natural disasters, and a historic coronation.
Political Milestones in France and the UK
On 9 May 1988, François Mitterrand secured a second term as French President, defeating Prime Minister Jacques Chirac with over 54 percent of the vote. Nearly two decades later, on 7 May 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy succeeded Chirac, winning the presidency on a platform of unity despite his divisive reputation as interior minister. Sarkozy would serve only one term, later facing criminal convictions.
In the UK, Tony Blair's Labour Party faced significant losses in local, Scottish, and Welsh elections on 4 May 2007, but avoided a complete meltdown. This was Blair's final electoral test before resigning days later, paving the way for Gordon Brown.
Northern Ireland's Historic Power-Sharing
On 9 May 2007, Northern Ireland reached a historic milestone as Democratic Unionist leader Ian Paisley and Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness formally pledged to share power. The Independent's front page dubbed the unlikely partnership the "miracle of Belfast."
Tragedy and Conflict
On 5 May 1987, The Independent revealed further details of an alleged MI5 plot to oust Prime Minister Harold Wilson in 1974 by leaking claims that Wilson was a Soviet agent. Four days later, nine people, including eight IRA members, were killed in a shootout with security forces at Loughgall, County Armagh.
On 10 May 1999, hundreds of demonstrators besieged the US and British embassies in Beijing after NATO bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing three journalists.
Natural Disaster and Royal Ceremony
Cyclone Nargis struck Burma on 6 May 2008, claiming an initial 10,000 lives, though the toll eventually exceeded 138,000. The military junta's restricted access for foreign aid drew global condemnation.
On 7 May 2023, King Charles III and Queen Camilla were crowned at Westminster Abbey, marking the UK's first coronation in 70 years.
