Maria Franca Ferrera, the billionaire heiress of the Ferrero Rocher confectionery empire, has died at the age of 87. She passed away peacefully at her home in Alba, located within Italy's picturesque Piedmont region, on Thursday. Ferrera was the widow of Michele Ferrero, the former owner of the Ferrero Group, which is renowned for producing iconic brands such as Nutella, Kinder, and Ferrero Rocher.
A Vast Inheritance and Family Legacy
Upon the death of her husband Michele in 2015, who was then Italy's wealthiest individual, Maria inherited control of a sprawling global business. The Ferrero Group operates approximately 40 factories worldwide, employs more than 47,000 people, and generates an annual turnover exceeding £15.7 billion. She is survived by her son Giovanni, who currently serves as the chairman of the group, along with her daughters-in-law Paola and Luisa, and five grandchildren. Tragically, her other son, Pietro, died in 2011 following a sudden illness.
Tributes from Italian Leadership
Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, paid heartfelt tribute to Maria Franca Ferrera, highlighting her significant contributions to Italian industry and society. Meloni stated, 'With her passing, Italy loses a figure who embodied—with elegance and quiet dignity—a model of enterprise that creates value while never losing sight of the community.' This sentiment underscores Ferrera's reputation as a discreet yet influential philanthropist and business leader.
Early Life and Marriage
Maria was born in Savigliano on 21 January 1939. After completing her schooling, she attended an interpreters' college in Milan. In 1961, she was hired as a translator and interpreter at the Ferrero company, where she met her future husband, Michele Ferrero. It was love at first sight, and the couple married in 1962. In a poignant reflection, Maria later recalled, 'I didn't like chocolate,' an ironic detail given the family's immense success in the confectionery industry. Their first son, Pietro, was born in 1963, followed by Giovanni in 1964.
Philanthropic Recognition and Honors
Throughout her life, Maria Franca Ferrera engaged in discreet philanthropic work, earning her numerous accolades. In 2024, she was awarded the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the country's highest-ranking honour. Additionally, on 19 December, she was unanimously appointed honorary life president of the Ferrero Group during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting, cementing her enduring legacy within the company.
