Democrats won control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, dealing a significant blow to Donald Trump's Republican Party.
With polls closing across America, Alaska's results confirmed a narrow Democratic lead that secured majorities in both chambers of Congress. The party, represented by blue, flipped traditional Republican strongholds including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina and Ohio.
Midterms seen as test of Trump's popularity
Although the election determined which party controls Congress, it was widely viewed as a referendum on Trump's standing. The outcome is expected to shape the final years of the president's term.
Following the losses, one critic branded Trump a 'failed lame duck president'. Ahead of the vote, Trump had urged Americans to 'pretend I'm on the ballot' while holding dozens of rallies across the country.
The president reacted angrily on Truth Social, writing: 'I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!'
Trump reacts to results
Speaking to Fox News in the early hours of Wednesday, the 80-year-old said he 'thought they'd do better.' He added: 'I'm a little bit surprised. I thought they'd do better. We had tremendous rallies, we had about 30 of them and there were thousands and thousands of people outside let alone inside, you couldn't get in.'
Trump said he believed he could 'transfer those people into candidates.'
Ossoff wins re-election in Georgia
Democrat Jon Ossoff, a potential 2028 presidential challenger, won re-election in Georgia, a state that had been a top Republican target. The 39-year-old senator, a leading critic of the president, has raised his national profile.
Ossoff told supporters: 'In sweeping and decisive victories the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame duck president Donald J Trump. And if, at times these last two years, amidst the ceaseless onslaught of brutality and indecency, you doubted whether our republic would survive, let tonight's results give you courage that the first light of dawn is on the horizon.'
