The by-election count in Clacton-on-Sea set a record with 34 candidates, making it the largest field ever in a UK by-election. The night was long and chaotic, with counting expected to last until at least 5am, possibly later. Acting returning officer Ian Davidson told staff: “We know it’s going to take longer than the General Election, the results there arrived at around 4am. Thank you for your tenacity and staying power.”
A Logistical Challenge
Davidson, an employee of Tendring District Council, explained the unique pressures of the count. “It’s a unique by-election,” he said. “It’s the most number of candidates that’s ever been in a by-election in this country.” He noted the logistical hurdles, including handling postal votes and ensuring envelopes were large enough for return. The council doubled the number of tables and had counters work in pairs for speed and accuracy. The ballot paper alone cost four times as much as for a general election.
Media Spotlight and Local Pride
The poll, triggered when Nigel Farage quit over a parliamentary probe into his finances, attracted massive media attention, partly because mainstream parties refused to field candidates. This left Count Binface as Farage’s main rival. Davidson welcomed the attention: “It’s fantastic,” he said. “It gives me the opportunity to talk about Tendring. We have some fantastic coasts and some fantastic beaches.” He also mentioned the upcoming Clacton Air Show, expecting a quarter of a million visitors. On the candidates, he said: “My only comment is that whoever gets elected, I want them to take very seriously the job of working for Clacton.”
The Night Unfolds
From 8.30pm, media passed through security at Clacton Leisure Centre. By 11pm, counting had begun, with a fine selection of biscuits and Clacton-branded rock provided. At 1.30am, most candidates were present, but Farage was absent. By 4am, news broke that Farage would not attend the results declaration due to a security threat. At 6am, the results were announced, with all candidates except Farage lined up. The count concluded after a night that tested endurance.
