Two prominent gay celebrities have delivered a stinging public rebuke to Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, urging their followers not to contribute to her campaign for a US Senate seat in Texas.
Podcast Hosts Issue Stark Warning to Supporters
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang and his Las Culturistas podcast co-host Matt Rogers used their platform to explicitly warn fans against financially backing Crockett's political ambitions. "Don't waste your money sending to Jasmine Crockett," Rogers stated bluntly, adding, "Do not do it." Yang concurred, saying, "I must agree. You're going to waste your money."
The hosts, both openly gay, pinpointed the Congresswoman's perceived ego as their primary concern. Rogers argued that any politician who makes their campaign "too obviously about themselves" loses his support, a criticism he also levelled at California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The Uphill Battle for a Texas Senate Seat
Rogers was adamant about Crockett's slim chances in the deeply conservative state, noting that Texas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1993. The seats are currently held by Republicans John Cornyn, who has served since 2002 and is seeking re-election, and Ted Cruz, re-elected in 2024. Rogers pointed to Beto O'Rourke's high-profile 2018 loss to Cruz as evidence of the challenge.
Crockett, who announced her bid for Cornyn's seat in December 2023, first faces a Democratic primary opponent: James Talarico, a 36-year-old state representative and devout Christian. Rogers praised Talarico, suggesting he would be a harder target for Republican attacks than the more defined and controversial Crockett.
Scrutiny Over Finances and Undisclosed Holdings
The criticism from the podcast hosts adds to existing scrutiny surrounding Crockett. Her campaign has faced questions after Federal Election Commission filings revealed at least $75,000 was spent on exclusive hotels, transport, and security in a single year.
Furthermore, she is under fire for failing to disclose ownership of more than 25 stocks during her 2022 congressional campaign and after entering Congress in 2023. According to reports, her undisclosed holdings and debts totalled over $110,000 and included shares in companies like Amazon and ExxonMobil. Ethics experts suggest these discrepancies could merit investigation, as some companies stood to benefit from legislation she supported.
Crockett, a civil rights attorney known for her vocal support of marijuana decriminalisation, also had business interests in cannabis through her firm, Black Diamond Investments, while simultaneously sponsoring pro-cannabis legislation.
The Daily Mail has contacted Congresswoman Crockett for comment on the podcasters' remarks and the ongoing ethical questions.
