AOC's Social Media Shift Sparks 2028 Presidential Run Speculation
AOC's X Activity Fuels 2028 White House Speculation

Speculation is intensifying that US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is positioning herself for a future presidential run, with observers pointing to a noticeable shift in her recent social media activity as a key indicator.

Analysing AOC's Recent X Posts

Over the past week, the New York Democrat's behaviour on the platform X, formerly Twitter, has drawn significant scrutiny. She has not posted about the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, an incident she previously condemned in a press interview as a "murder" that needed prosecution.

Instead, her public commentary has focused on two other international issues. She denounced pro-Hamas protesters who gathered outside a synagogue in Queens, calling the chants "disgusting and antisemitic." Separately, she expressed support for protesters in Iran, stating, "The Iranian government's violent crackdown on demonstrators is horrific and must stop now."

This selective engagement was highlighted by the End Wokeness X account, which noted: "AOC's activity on X over the past week: 1 post condemning pro-Hamas chants, 1 post supporting the protests in Iran, 0 posts about Renee Good and ICE." The account concluded, "In other words, AOC is running in 2028."

Building a National Profile and Campaign Infrastructure

The theory is bolstered by Ocasio-Cortez's concerted efforts to build a national profile and campaign machinery. In 2023, she toured the United States with Senator Bernie Sanders on their 'Fighting the Oligarchy' tour. She has also hired several of Sanders' former senior advisors and invested millions in digital advertising and donor list acquisition to expand her grassroots fundraising potential.

Kyle Tharp, author of the politics newsletter Chaotic Era, told Axios in September that her team's digital spending is among the highest of any politician in 2024, resulting in "hundreds of thousands of new small-dollar donations" and millions of new social media followers.

Some former aides to Bernie Sanders now view her as the natural heir who could broaden the appeal of the progressive movement. "She has a supporter base that, in many ways, has a larger potential width than Bernie's," said Ari Rabin-Havt, a longtime Sanders aide. He argued it would be "the height of arrogance to assume she couldn't win the 2028 nomination."

Polling and Political Positioning

An early December poll by Argument/Verasight provided a tantalising glimpse of her potential strength, showing Ocasio-Cortez narrowly defeating likely Republican nominee Vice President JD Vance in a theoretical match-up, 51% to 49%. The congresswoman herself shared these results online, adding fuel to the speculation.

Her political rhetoric has also taken on a broader, unifying tone. Following Zohran Mamdani's victory in New York City, she warned the Democratic "Old Guard" that the future belonged to those ready to fight. "This is about do you understand the assignment of fighting fascism right now?" she stated, framing the struggle as a non-partisan issue.

While Ocasio-Cortez has not publicly declared any intention to run for the presidency, the combination of her strategic social media messaging, significant investment in national campaigning infrastructure, and favourable early polling has firmly placed the 36-year-old congresswoman at the centre of 2028 election conjecture.
