Scotmid Venezuela Earthquake Appeal Raises £22k in Four Weeks

Members and customers shopping in Scotmid, Semichem and Lakes & Dales Co-op stores across Lanarkshire helped to raise £22,000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Venezuela Earthquake Appeal in just four weeks.

The money was collected throughout the UK through digital micro-donation charity Pennies, which gives customers the option to add a 10p donation when paying by card or digital wallet. Across the four-week appeal, thousands of individual donations quickly added up to make a meaningful contribution to the emergency response.

Appeal launched after devastating earthquakes

The DEC appeal was launched after two devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and leaving thousands of people dead or injured. DEC charities and their local partners are providing vital support to affected communities, including emergency shelter, food, clean water and medical care.

“Raising £22,000 in just four weeks is a fantastic achievement and reflects the kindness and generosity shown across the communities we serve.

“Every 10p donation made at the till has helped contribute to something much bigger, and we are incredibly grateful to our members and customers for choosing to support the DEC appeal in this simple but meaningful way.

“Their collective support has made a significant contribution to the vital support being delivered to people affected by the earthquakes, and we want to thank them sincerely for showing such compassion when it was needed most.”

Support for affected communities

The total raised will help DEC charities continue delivering urgent support to people affected by the earthquakes, showing how donations made close to home can help communities in crisis thousands of miles away.
