The United States has mandated a comprehensive security reassessment at all its embassies and diplomatic facilities globally, following a drone attack on its compound in Baghdad as hostilities with Iran intensify. This directive was issued in an internal State Department communication on Tuesday, according to a report from The Washington Post.
Immediate Security Measures Implemented
In the message, diplomatic posts were instructed to convene Emergency Action Committees and evaluate their security posture due to "the ongoing and developing situation in the Middle East and the potential for spill-over effects." The order comes after at least three drones targeted the US embassy in Iraq's capital on Tuesday.
Details of the Baghdad Embassy Attack
As reported by the Associated Press, two of the drones were successfully intercepted, but a third crashed inside the embassy compound. Iraqi security officials confirmed these details to the AP. Fortunately, the State Department has stated that no American personnel at the embassy or the consulate in Irbil have been killed or injured in recent attacks.
Escalating Threats to US Diplomatic Facilities
American diplomatic installations have faced increased threats since the US and Israel initiated military strikes against Iran over two weeks ago. An internal State Department message from Monday, cited by The Washington Post, indicated that militia groups in the region have carried out an estimated at least 292 attacks on US facilities since February 28.
State Department's Cautious Response
A State Department spokesperson declined to confirm the specifics of The Washington Post's report, telling The Independent that the department does not comment on internal communications to ensure the safety of US personnel and facilities. The spokesperson emphasised that every embassy in the Middle East had convened Emergency Action Committees prior to the commencement of US strikes on Iran, and these committees have continued to meet throughout the military campaign.
The assembly of these committees is based on various operational considerations and does not necessarily indicate an immediate, specific threat, according to the spokesperson.
Wider Context of the Iran Conflict
The US military has designated its operations against Iran as "Operation Epic Fury," with US Central Command reporting strikes on more than 7,000 targets. The humanitarian impact has been severe, with the Associated Press noting that the Iranian Red Crescent has reported over 1,300 fatalities in Iran during the conflict.
On the US side, the Pentagon has confirmed that at least 13 service members have been killed, and approximately 200 have been injured. US Central Command has clarified that the majority of these injuries are minor, with more than 180 personnel having already returned to active duty.
This global security review underscores the heightened risks faced by US diplomatic missions as regional tensions escalate, prompting a proactive approach to safeguard American interests and personnel abroad.
