Thailand has accused Cambodia of a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire that ended five days of deadly cross-border clashes, claiming Cambodian troops launched an overnight attack on the frontier. The alleged incident occurred in Sisaket province, where Thai forces came under small arms fire and grenade assaults, according to a statement from Thailand's foreign ministry.
The ceasefire came into effect on Tuesday after the worst fighting in years along the 800km border, which left at least 43 dead and forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate. However, the truce has been shaky from the start, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsab confirmed the overnight clashes but said that Thai forces maintained control and that conditions along the border were reported as normal from Wednesday morning. Cambodia has previously denied breaking the truce, which was brokered in Malaysia with the intervention of US President Donald Trump.
Meetings between rival commanders had taken place on Tuesday, agreeing on de-escalation steps including a halt on troop reinforcements. However, a Thai border crisis centre spokesperson described the situation as still fragile in the early days of the ceasefire.
