Turkey has intensified its military campaign in northern Syria, launching a series of airstrikes against Kurdish militant targets. The operation comes just days after a deadly bomb attack in the capital, Ankara, which Turkish authorities have blamed on Kurdish fighters.
Ankara Blast Triggers Retaliation
The Turkish Defence Ministry confirmed that its warplanes struck over 20 targets in Syria, including shelters, ammunition depots, and logistical hubs used by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its Syrian affiliate, the People's Protection Units (YPG). The ministry stated that the operation was a direct response to the Ankara bombing, which injured two police officers.
Regional Tensions Rise
The airstrikes have further destabilised the already volatile region, with Syria condemning the attacks as a violation of its sovereignty. Meanwhile, Israel has reportedly carried out its own strikes near Damascus, adding to the escalating conflict.
Analysts warn that Turkey's latest offensive could strain its relations with Western allies, particularly the United States, which has supported the YPG in the fight against ISIS.
Humanitarian Concerns
Local aid groups have expressed alarm over the potential impact on civilians in northern Syria, where thousands have already been displaced by previous Turkish military operations. The United Nations has called for restraint from all parties to prevent further civilian casualties.
