Former US President Donald Trump has unveiled a controversial peace proposal for the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia—a plan that critics argue heavily favours Moscow. The proposal, which suggests significant territorial concessions from Ukraine, has been met with fierce backlash from Kyiv and Western allies.
A Plan That Alarms Kyiv
Trump's proposal reportedly includes demands for Ukraine to cede Crimea and parts of the Donbas region to Russia in exchange for an end to hostilities. Ukrainian officials have dismissed the plan as a "surrender document" that rewards Russian aggression.
"This is not peace; it’s capitulation," said a senior Ukrainian diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Any deal that legitimises Russia’s illegal annexations sets a dangerous precedent for global security."
Western Allies Express Concern
The plan has also drawn sharp criticism from European leaders and US Democrats, who argue that it undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty and emboldens Putin. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the proposal "unacceptable," while French President Emmanuel Macron warned against "rewarding aggression."
Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters defend the plan as a pragmatic solution to end the bloodshed. "The war has dragged on too long," said a Republican senator. "We need realistic diplomacy, not endless conflict."
Putin’s Silent Approval
While the Kremlin has not officially endorsed Trump’s proposal, analysts suggest that Moscow views it as a favourable framework. "Putin would gain much of what he wants without further military escalation," said a geopolitical expert. "It’s a win for Russia."
As the debate intensifies, Ukraine remains steadfast in its refusal to negotiate away its territory. With Western military aid still flowing, Kyiv appears determined to fight on—regardless of Trump’s controversial peace plan.
